Churchill Bulldogs 15 Wootton Patriots 9
The Bulldogs fall behind the home-team Patriots in Rivalry Game 2019 by 9 at the half before roaring back in the third quarter. The Pats kicked an early 30 yard field goal and turned a Bulldog fumble on the ensuing kickoff into another score to give them the 9 point edge with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. The Bulldog offense was unable to mount a scoring drive in the first half, surrendering the ball 3 times via interception, but the defense held and prevented any further damage.
The second half was a different game entirely. With the ball deep in Bulldog territory, junior QB Cole Haglund connected with junior TE Jay Wood who took it 67 yards to the Pats 19. Five plays later, Haglund found junior WR Josh Pilarski in the middle of the end zone for a 4 yard touchdown completion. Sophomore RB Bryce Wilson stretched over the goal line for the two point conversion. The Churchill punt team forced a turnover later in the quarter, gaining possession at the Wootton 27. Senior Kaelee Fall made a spectacular sideline catch on third down, taking the ball to the the 3 yard line, setting up Wilson’s 4 yard TD run. Freshman kicker Daniel Huck tacked on the extra point to complete the scoring, as the Bulldogs delivered an exciting win to an overjoyed, and loudly supportive, Bulldog throng.
Bryce Wilson recorded 12 carries for 103 yards of offense…Cole Haglund and his receivers added 148 yards on 9 catches. On defense, junior LB Cole Smith had 12 tackles (6 solo) and junior DB Evan Levitt nabbed an interception, and sophomore Ryne Acheson had 2 key plays, including an interception with Wootton driving toward the end zone with a few seconds left in the game.
The state champion Quince Orchard Cougars are up next for the Bulldogs, with kickoff scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Friday, 9/27 at Shepherd Stadium.
