Girls Junior Varsity Lacrosse, Girls Varsity Lacrosse · 10 Questions w/Coach Nicholas

Today we get to know our Varsity Girls’ Lacrosse Head Coach, Tara Nicholas. Tara came to us last year but sadly due to the Pandemic, she never got to coach her first game as Bulldog Head Coach. Luckily, we’ll get to see her this spring! So get to know Coach Nicholas.

I was born and raised in MOCO. I was always involved in sports as a young kid. In elementary school, I played soccer, basketball, lacrosse and even swam. Although I loved playing as many sports as I could, it became clear to me that lacrosse was a passion. I wanted to get to be as great as I could and that meant that I would have to prioritize lacrosse. I joined a travel team in 5th grade and played in tournaments all year round all over the east coast.

I attended Northwest High School where I still hold the all-time scoring record. I played Varsity Lacrosse all 4-years and earned many accolades such as all-division, all-county, and all-met in my time. My junior year, I was the all-time leading scorer in Montgomery County with 86 goals in a season. After high-school, I went to play in college at Indiana University of PA (IUP), a division II school. My first year at IUP was the first year our team made it into the NCAA top 20. Each year I attended IUP, we were in the top 20 and even the top 10 at one point. I graduated college with close to 100 career points. Playing in college was one of the best decisions I ever made!

While I played lacrosse at IUP, I also studied early childhood and special education. After graduating in December of 2016, I returned back to Montgomery County where I was hired as a lacrosse coach at my alma-mater Northwest High School. I knew when I graduated college that I wanted to give back and coach to help young girls find the same passion with lacrosse that I did. I was the Head Varsity Coach at NW for 3 years and now enter my 2nd year as the head varsity coach for Churchill. Around the same time of being hired as the lacrosse coach, I also was hired as a 2nd grade teacher at Daly E.S. where I have been the past four years. Both teaching and coaching are a passion of mine and I love being able to work with kids every day.

When I am not working, I love enjoying time with my family, fiancé and friends. My fiancé and I are both involved in social leagues where we play many sports (we can’t give them up😊 ). Frederick has become home to our little family, us and our two cats. We are planning to get married next summer!

  1. What motivates you to work hard?

I would say what motivates me to working hard is the excitement of success. I always want to do and be the best I can at everything I do. This is probably where the competitive side of me comes out as well.

2. What did you want to be when you grew up as a child?

I have always known that I wanted to be a teacher. I was never sure of which age group I would teach until later on but I was always inspired by my teachers over the years. I remember when I was younger, always playing “teacher” with my friends and I HAD to be the teacher. What finally drew me to the elementary field was a senior year internship in high school where I worked in both 1st grade and special education. I realized that this was something I had to do.

3. What is your favorite childhood memory?

My favorite childhood memory is really just getting to spend quality time with my family. My family loves to be outdoors so I would say when we would go to the Potomac River and ride on my dad’s waverunner. During the summer, we would spend each weekend out there swimming, tubing, skiing, and really just having a blast. We did that for several summers before my brother and I really grew up!

4. What is the last book you read that you absolutely couldn’t put down?

The last book I read was A Woman in the Window. I brought it to the beach and couldn’t stop reading it. I think I read the whole book in two days. It was a dark- thriller with a great surprise ending. I am looking forward to seeing the movie when it comes out to hopefully get that same excitement.

5. What’s your all-time favorite movie?

My favorite all-time movie is probably The Notebook. I know it’s a cliché but it is one I could watch over and over again!

6. Who is your favorite band?

I would say John Mayer is one of my favorite artists of all times. No matter what kind of mood I am in, when I play John Mayer will instantly cheer my mood.

7. What is your favorite holiday?

I think Christmas is my favorite holiday. I love seeing everyone so happy Christmas morning. Really, I love seeing the happiness all over people all month. I love to decorate as soon as Thanksgiving is over. When I wake up each morning and walk down the stairs to see a lit up tree, my day is instantly made.

8. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be?

This is a tough one! Pizza is something I could probably eat each day and never get sick of it. As long as the pizza has pepperonis on it, I’m good. If we can add sausage and bacon though, it would be even better!

9. Which famous person would you like to be best friends with?

There’s a lot of people I would love to be best friends with but I think it would be Ellen Pompeo from Grey’s Anatomy. She just seems so genuine and passionate. I would love to meet her some day and be her person.

10. If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I wish I could have the superpower to travel back in time. I would love to get to hang with my Grandma again 😊
