JV Football, Varsity Football · 10 Questions With Coach Rydzewski

Today is the first day of our weekly series of “10 Questions” with our coaching staff. Each Wednesday, we’ll introduce you to a coach beyond their sport. To start this series, we’ll start with one of our newest additions to our Athletic’s Program, Head Varsity Football Coach Joe Rydzewski.

I grew up in Gaithersburg, MD. I went to Gaithersburg HS, where I graduated in 1996. I played football at Western Md. College, where we were consistently in the national playoffs.  I currently live in Monrovia, MD with my wife Nicole and 3 kids. Our three kids Giuliana 6, Rocco, 4 and Charlie 3 keep us very busy, but we all are very excited to be a part of the Bulldog football family. I hope they get to watch the Bulldogs from the sidelines here as soon as possible.

  1. What motivates you to work hard?

I have been lucky enough to have 3 tremendous role models, mentors,  and influential people in my life. John Harvill (HS coach) Al Thomas (College Coach), and Lew Rydzewski (Father). More times than I can count I have been in situations where I simply ask myself what would either of these 3 men do or what would they advise me to do in a certain situation. They are a constant source of motivation for me.

  1. What did you want to be when you grew up as a child?

I’m doing it! I wanted to coach HS sports and teach in a HS.

  1. What is your favorite childhood memory?

I guess not exactly a childhood memory but getting to play college football with my brother John was a fond memory for sure. We were both multiple year all conference performers at WMC.

  1. What is the last book you read that you absolutely couldn’t put down?

A book about leadership and never giving up called Into the Fire by Dakota Meyer.

  1. What’s your all-time favorite movie?

Good Will Hunting- I loved the relationships Will had with his friends he grew up with. It reminded me how close my friends and I we were at Gaithersburg from elementary school days to present day.

  1. Who is your favorite band?

Green Day

  1. What is your favorite holiday?

Thanksgiving- great meal, great family/friends, and football. Can’t beat it!

  1. If you could only eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be?

I think crabs. I feel like most people would get sick of them. I can’t see myself ever getting sick of eating Maryland Crabs.

  1. Which famous person would you like to be best friends with?

Buck Showalter former Orioles’ Manager. I feel Buck had a unique way to reach of his players in his own special way. I also could watch hours of Buck Showalter press conference clips.

  1. If you could have a superpower what would it be?

I started to overthink this question. It’s FLY! I would want the ability to fly.

Thank Coach Rydzewski! Look out for our next Coach’s interview next Wednesday!
