It was going to be a tough game no matter how you looked at it. Richard Montgomery had knocked off our boys’ lacrosse team earlier this season and was undefeated. They were the top dog in the county this year and in the first half of the 4A West Regional Championship, RM showed why they had been all season long. The Rockets stellar defense shut down the Dawgs offense. If not for some big saves from Andrew Robinson in goal, the Dawgs would have been down more than the 4-1 score with 13 seconds remaining in the half. But just before half, a momentum shift began. Junior FUGO Merrick Willeford took the faceoff and bullied his way through the RM defense to get a shot off and score at the buzzer, cutting the deficit to 2 going into halftime. In the 3rd, the Dawgs carried that momentum and score 2 more unanswered goals both by Jack Punda, tying the game at 4. From there RM would score to retake the lead until with just under 2 minutes remaining, Senior Ryan Shure scored tying the game and putting the two teams into overtime. In overtime, Merrick would win the faceoff setting the Dawgs up on offense. After working the ball around, Senior Jack Abel found himself all alone in front of the net. Abel let loose with a rocket shot that found it’s way to the back of the net, winning the game for the Dawgs and sending them to the MPSSAA State Semi-Finals for the 5th straight year. A year that was one of the most challenging for the team due to graduating 18 seniors and the influx of so many sophomore and freshmen into the lineup had all been worth it as Abel’s shot won the MPSSAA 4A West Regional Championship for a record 5th time in a row.
The Dawgs travel to Gaithersburg HS for a noon matchup with Severna Park on Saturday, May 18th for the MPSSAA. Come out and cheer them on as they attempt to play in the MPSSAA State Final for the 3rd straight year.
