For several years our baseball team has had a small scoreboard sitting off to the side of right field at Chuck Stevens Field. The board was no longer operational and as a result, the team went without. The last three years we have looked for ways to get a new scoreboard but were never able to find the funding. This past fall we found that funding thanks to two people. Before sharing their names, I have to first mention Andy Ehrlich. Andy was a 1991 graduate of WCHS and played for the baseball team. Andy went onto college where he passed away the next year due to meningitis. Andy was an extremely special person who was loved by so many and impacted many lives during his short time with us. After Andy’s death, his sister Dawn created the Andy Ehrlich Scholarship which is given to a WCHS baseball player each year along with helping to provide other needed equipment and facility improvements for the baseball team. Dawn has done an amazing job honoring her brother all of these years while also helping out so many WCHS students.
Now back to our two individuals that made our new scoreboard happen. The first person I have to acknowledge is Janine Rosen. Janine heard that we needed a new scoreboard for the baseball team and even though Janine did not have a child on the team, she went to work to make it happen. Janine contacted her very good friend David Cohn who was Andy’s best friend growing up along with Janine’s. David had always wanted to find a way to honor his best friend Andy so when the opportunity came about to put a scoreboard up in Andy’s name, David jumped at the opportunity.
Working with David to make this happen was wonderful from start to finish. To see how much David cared for his friend and his friends family by doing this was absolutely amazing. David wanted everything to be perfect for them all and for our team. When the cost of the project was increased due to getting the scoreboard to look exactly like we wanted in order to honor Andy, David didn’t flinch and took care of it. I am so very lucky to have been able to work with David to make this happen and as a result we have an amazing scoreboard that honors his best friend.
On Monday, May 6th we celebrated Andy Ehrlich and the new Andy Ehrlich Scoreboard at Chuck Stevens Baseball Field with over 100 people in attendance. Thanks go out to Leslie & Marty Janis, Karen DePirri, Dwight Fettig & all of our baseball families for helping to make this event as special as it was.
Thank you again David, Janine, & Dawn for all you have done to make this happen and for keeping Andy’s spirit alive at Winston Churchill High School.
